New Theme

If you are a frequent reader, you have probably noticed that I have changed the theme for this blog several times in the last 6 months. I am having a hard time finding a theme I truly like, and to be honest I am not sold on the current theme either but I am giving it a run.

When I first started this blog in 2007 I took an existing theme and customized it extensively. Unfortunately, in the 4 years since I started this blog, WordPress has released several updates and eventually my old theme broke. I did not have the time to fix the old theme, and I do not have the time now to put in the hours of work required to customize a theme to my liking. Therefore, I will probably continue to update my theme ever few months until I finally find one I like.

Short Term or Long Term?

I am in a dilemma at work right now. I have two options I can take. I can choose to continue what I am doing right now which is great in the short term and I will be promoted within 12 months. However, if I take this option I will need to leave the company within 4 years as I will get promoted and then stall. Also, I am not particularly enjoying what I am doing right now.

On the other hand I have an opportunity that is great for me in the long term. However, in the short term it is the absolute stupidest move I could make. There will be no chance that I get promoted in the next 2 years and I will have to build up support for me all over again to get a promotion or raise.

So I guess for me the question is do I want to stay at my current company for the long run, or should I continue doing what I am doing now and reap the benefits in the short term, but have to leave the company in the long term?

What would you do if you faced this situation at work?

Elections, Vacations, and More

After a small bout of battling a small bit of depression, I should be back and posting regularly again now. I am sorry for all of those looking forward to my posts but I let all of the non-critical things going and this blog is one of the less critical things I do.

Well, Colorado Springs finished their run-off election for mayor today, and I wish I could say I was surprised but in my opinion the residents of Colorado Springs elected to continue the city’s slide towards becoming a retirement community and elected Steve Bach. Colorado Springs has for several years been suffering from a severe youth drain and Steve Bach has no chance of reversing that trend. With his statements on Same-Sex benefits, “Because I respect freedom nationally, I believe in empowering the respect of virtues locally.” Or his super conservative developer buddies not many youth are likely to move here.

Honestly, I will give Colorado Springs one more election, but suspect in 4 years I will be looking for a new place to live.

So, tomorrow is my birthday, and I decided that for my birthday I was going to take time off of work. So I will be on vacation for the next three days. That means I will not be doing research on issues I would typically post about on this blog, but I promise I will still post at least once over the next 5 days. I still have not figured out what I am doing for my vacation. Probably finishing some of the to do list I have let build up over the last 3 weeks and finally getting back onto my bike and starting my biking season again. As I said I was battling a small bout of depression… I probably should have forced myself onto the bike sooner as it probably would have helped me defeat it.

I am really excited that the brunt of televised cycling season is back. From now until the end of July there will be a cycling race on TV almost every week. Providing me plenty of background entertainment at work. However, I am really saddened by the passing of Wouter Weylandt in a horrific crash in the Giro d’Italia. Cycling is a very dangerous sport and I wish there was more that could be done to improve safety.

I guess that is my stream of thought for today…

Not Posting?

You may have noticed I have not been posting a lot lately. I have been in a little bit of a funk for the past couple weeks. Burnt out at work. Sick of doing house work. And generally just not being happy.

The good news is that I am starting to feel better, and should be resuming more frequent posting over the next week or so.

Attention All Cyclists

Next week the Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation project is putting on a national bike count and many cities are looking for volunteers. If you are a cyclist, pedestrian, or anyone who would like to see an expansion of alternative transportation routes (i.e. Bike lanes, recreation paths, etc).

I encourage you to volunteer if your city is participating. Below is a list of some cities that are participating; however, it is not an extensive list. If your city is not listed below please contact your city’s transportation engineer and ask if they are participating and need help. If they are not participating ask them to participate them in future counts and point them to the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation project for more information, URL http://bikepeddocumentation.org/.

The information gathered via this project can be of major use at both the city and national levels helping to increase the argument for further funding of alternative transportation routes and planning. If you are at all interested in furthering bike routes, and bike lanes in your community please get involved.

I am sure there are many many more, but finding information on them is very difficult.
