There is generally a problem within the gay activist community of raising money. Most gays do not seem to donate. So who do I give my money to and who do I not donate to. This is not an attack on any organization or an endorsement of any organization. This is simply the way I feel my money is best put to use.
I do not donate to the HRC. HRC is too big for me. I do not feel that if I donated my voice would be heard, and in the end I want an organization that is going to fight for what I want and need. Not an organization that is going to fight for what it’s biggest donors want and need.
I do not usually donate to GetEqual. I do agree a fair bit with what GetEqual is doing. However, for me their protests are too small. I would support GetEqual if their protests were 20-50 people actually participating in the civil disobedience. Not 2-10 people participating in the civil disobedience and going to jail. Although I might donate a little bit from time to time GetEqual is not an organization I primarily donate to.
I do not donate to any individual political campaigns. By the very definition they are politicians and 99 times out of 100 they are going to do what is best for their political career not what is best for me.
I do not donate to the Stonewall Democrats or GOProud. I am not a Democrat or a Republican. I believe both parties are on the wrong track and neither deserve my support.
I do donate to the Trevor Project. They are saving lives every day. A few dollars to help save the life of another person is well worth every penny.
I do donate to the Gill Foundation. The Gill Foundation supports both local and national LGBT nonprofits. They are not focusing on one particular issue or a very limited few issues but are focusing on the overall gay community.
I do donate to local gay organizations. With a local gay organization my voice will be better heard. With a local organization they are focusing on the local issues and not targeting a few specific issues that someone said we should focus on.
